2020 Word of The Year

2020 Word of the year written on a notebook

Do you select a word for the year? I love this practice, and I have made it a part of my yearly ritual for the last three years. “Why select a word for the year? How is that beneficial?” you may ask.

From experience, I can say that picking a word for the year has kept me focused and driven. It has helped me to be intentional about the person I want to be and the goals I want to achieve. I believe it can do the same for you.

You may be wondering how you choose a word for the year. I have found that asking myself the following questions helps me to come up with my word for the year:

  • How do I want to be remembered?

  • What kind of person do I want to be?

  • What would I like to achieve in 2020?

  • What virtue do I wish I had more of?

  • How would I like to grow as a person in 2020?

Some word ideas for inspiration include love, joy, give, grow, strength, kindness, wisdom, inspire, and courage.

This year, I have chosen the word create. Actually, it kind of chose me. It seemed that almost everywhere I went, I saw this word—on the back of T-shirts, in movies, on advertisements, on billboards, and even in the books I read. This word really resonates with me concerning what I want to achieve in 2020.

In 2020, I want to “create” in the following ways:

  • I want to be purposeful in creating meaningful memories with my husband, family, and friends. I want to make sure I’m fully present with them and taking time to celebrate life with them.

  • I want to focus on creating a welcoming home. This includes finishing a few of my dreaded house projects, which—once finished—will make our home feel even more like our safe haven.

  • I want to be intentional in growing my business by creating systems and building skills that will take my business to where I dream it will be one day.

  • Last, this year I know I am meant to create through writing. Creating in this way is my passion, and writing brings me so much joy. I am by no means an astute author, and I don't kid myself into believing that I am a talented writer. But, you know what, I’m not writing for anyone else. I'm writing for me. I’m going to create for me. I have always journaled—jotting down life events, lessons, prayers, and even original stories. Writing is a part of who I am and how I keep my sanity!

So 2020 will be the year I am more intentional about creating space and time to enjoy my family and friends; tackling those house projects to create a warm, welcoming environment for us to do life; creating momentum in my business for it to grow; and, above all, simply creating in the ways that bring me joy, like writing something every day. Maybe I will share some of my writings in social media posts or blog posts.

Now that I’ve shared my word for the year with you, I want to know: do you have a word for this year, friend? I would love to hear what it is and why you chose it in the comments.
