How to Dress for an Apple Body Shape



Imagine staring into a wardrobe full of clothes and feeling frustrated because you have nothing to wear AGAIN. So instead of reaching for clothes you have spent good money on, you end up wearing the same old clothes week in and week out. You are not alone! This is a problem so many women experience.


Just recently, during a consultation with one of my clients, we were discussing her go-to pieces in her wardrobe. She shared that despite her full closet, she finds herself reaching for baggy jeans and sweatshirts on most days because she believes that these items of clothing hide her body well. After years of shopping and adding pretty clothes to her wardrobe, she admitted that most of these clothes do not flatter her figure and she does not feel comfortable in them. As a result, she settles for her baggy go-to sweatshirt and jeans every week in an attempt to “hide” her body.


My heart broke for her as I listened to her struggles with her body image. I wanted to reach through the screen on our Zoom call and give her a big hug. I had such a lump in my throat as I listened to her story and raw emotions. I wanted to scream from the mountain tops: “You are beautiful!”


I then asked her, “Do you know your body shape?”

After a long pause, my client said, “You know what, I have no idea.”


It turned out that the reason she had no pieces of clothing that she loved in her wardrobe was because she did not know her body shape or what pieces of clothing would compliment her figure. So when she would go shopping she was directionless and would just shop the mannequins or what was trending for that season.


Have you ever felt like my client? Do you have a wardrobe full of beautiful clothes yet you feel like you have nothing to wear? Maybe you have had trouble feeling confident in your clothes, therefore you reach for pieces that “hide” your body?

This post is geared specifically for the beautiful Apple Body Shape. My client is an Apple Body Shape, and I would like to share a few of the pointers I shared with her in hopes that you will find it helpful too.


Before I dive deeper into the Apple Body Shape, I want to remind you that all body shapes are beautiful! No body shape is superior or “more beautiful” than the other. Also, whenever I discuss body shapes the terms I use to describe the body shape are terms that are meant to help inform and help you identify and dress your body type. Keep in mind that body shapes have nothing to do with weight, but rather how your body is structured. Finally, love your body, embrace it, celebrate it for the gift that it is and be kind to yourself. You are beautiful!

Now, you most likely have an Apple Body Shape if you have:

  • Broad shoulders and bigger bust.

  • A less defined waist.

  • Your bust, waist, and hips tend to be around the same size.

If you are having trouble figuring out if you are an Apple Body Shape, I recommend standing in front of a mirror in a bathing suit and looking at your body to see if it is similar to the description. Or use an appropriate measuring tape and measure your body. You will need a friend to help you with the measuring process.

Once you have discovered that you are an Apple Body Shape here are a few styling tips and wardrobe staples for you!


Styling Tips:

  • Wear clothing that makes your torso appear longer.

  • Wear printed pants or skirts with a solid top.

  • Wear layers

  • Avoid heavy detail or embellishments at the waistline.

Wardrobe staples:

  • Empire cut tops and dresses.

  • Layers like Blazers, jackets, cardigans, kimonos.

  • Tops that have a v neck or scoop neck

  • Accessories are your friend! Add beautiful earrings and necklaces to your outfits!
